Students enter adult education programs with goals that may include high school equivalency achievement and career goals beyond that step. They enter planning to meet their goals but often adult life gets in the way. Children get sick, work schedules change, transportation becomes unreliable, or there are pressures from family and friends to do other things. Learning about the obstacles students face, what supports are available, and how the program can implement plans to support students to achieve their goals benefits students and improves retention rates, measurable skills gains (MSGs), and transition to post-secondary education and training.
The Adult Student Persistence course covers the types of barriers students face, the supports they already have, the supports programs can provide, and a framework for planning to improve persistence. Participants of the Facilitator Course receive all of the materials necessary to present the sessions on their own. Coaching from the Adult Student Persistence Team is available upon request.
